Problems in Changing Organiization Culture

It is a pattern of beliefs and expectations shared by members of an organization, these beliefs and expectations produce norms and powerfully shape the behavior of individuals and groups in the organization. (Sch & Davis, 1983)

Note: From What is organizational culture, May 2016 (Rick, 2015)

Recent research has shown that organizational culture effects to the sustainable performance (CIPD, 2011). Organizational culture is related with the value creation, which ultimately affect to employee engagement (CIPD, 2016). Culture interacts with most of business processes, impacts decision-making, engagement, productivity trust and well-being, how the employees behave and values they bring to work (CIPD, 2016). So, organization culture is an important part in of HR in an organization.

Problem of changing organizational culture

With globalization, rapid development of technology, social changes and competition changes modern day businesses (CIPD, 2016). Organization culture plays huge role in attracting best human capital to the organization so organizations try to change their culture to match with the values of the modern generations.
Unfortunately, 70% of all initiatives to change culture is failed (Rick, 2016). Most of this failure are driven by weaknesses in management (Leadership) and negative employee attitudes (Rick, 2016).
Note: From Barriers to organizational change – Obstacles to organizational change, September 2016 (Rick, 2016)

Why it is difficult to change?
·         “Culture is practically the DNA of the organization” (Rick, 2015) it determine how everything else work in an organization (Rick, 2015).
·         Organizational culture is embedded in entire organizational system so changes to it affect in every level of organization, organization hierarchy and structure (Rick, 2015).
·         Change in organization culture requires a change in leadership often change in leadership style
·         To day cultural changes require improvement in infrastructure like work environment, technology etc. So, it will be expensive (Rick, 2016).
·         Culture change requires changes in values and beliefs of an organization. Today new trends like flexible working hours, outsourcing play a crucial role in value creation.
Organizations which overcome those challengers are becoming successful not only in culture change but also in performance.
